John Mulaney

John Mulaney is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and producer known for his polished, story-driven comedy and for his work as a writer on Saturday Night Live. His stand-up specials have earned him a large following and several Emmy Awards, and he has become a frequent and popular host of SNL.

Early life

Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the city. He attended Georgetown University, where he was involved in comedy and improv before moving to New York to pursue stand-up. In his early career he performed in clubs and worked in comedy alongside collaborators with whom he would continue to work for years.

Career

Mulaney joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in the late 2000s, contributing to sketches and helping create recurring characters, most famously the loud nightclub expert Stefon, performed by Bill Hader. While writing for the show he continued developing his stand-up, releasing specials including The Top Part and New in Town that established his reputation for tightly constructed, autobiographical material delivered in a precise, old-fashioned style.

He later starred in and co-created a short-lived sitcom, simply titled Mulaney, and, alongside Nick Kroll, developed the two-man stage comedy Oh, Hello, in which the pair played a pair of cantankerous elderly New Yorkers; the show moved to Broadway and was later filmed as a special. His stand-up specials Kid Gorgeous at Radio City and Baby J were both well received and recognized with Emmy Awards. He also became a key voice cast member of the animated series Big Mouth, voicing a version of himself as a teenager, and he created the children's musical comedy special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.

Recent work

Mulaney has spoken publicly about his recovery from substance use and a 2020 intervention, material he addressed directly in the special Baby J. He has continued to tour as a stand-up and to host Saturday Night Live, where his appearances, often featuring elaborate musical sketches built around New York City themes, have become recurring events that pair him with cast members past and present. He has expanded into hosting with live talk-style projects, including a Netflix live series, and has remained active in writing and producing.
