Gwen Renée Stefani is an American singer, songwriter and fashion designer who rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the rock band No Doubt before launching a successful solo pop career. With a distinctive voice and image, she has been a prominent figure in popular music since the 1990s and has also worked as a television personality and entrepreneur.

Early life

Stefani was born on October 3, 1969, in Fullerton, California, and grew up in nearby Anaheim. She was introduced to music through her family and developed an interest in performing as a young woman. In the mid-1980s she joined No Doubt, the band that would bring her to international prominence.

Career

No Doubt broke through with the album Tragic Kingdom (1995), powered by hits such as "Don't Speak," which fused ska, pop and rock and made Stefani a star. The band released further successful albums into the early 2000s. Stefani then launched a solo career with Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (2004), which produced pop hits including "Hollaback Girl," and followed with additional solo albums that blended pop, dance and hip-hop influences.

Alongside her music, Stefani built a presence in fashion, founding the clothing line L.A.M.B. and other brand ventures, and became known for her style and evolving image as much as her songs. She balanced solo work with periodic No Doubt reunions and recordings, and her visual reinventions, from ska-influenced rocker to glossy pop star, were widely noted by the music press. She also pursued occasional acting, including a supporting film role, and lent her voice to various collaborations and soundtrack work across genres.

Recent work

Stefani became widely known to a new audience as a coach on the singing competition The Voice, appearing across multiple seasons and mentoring contestants on the long-running program. During her time on the show she met country singer Blake Shelton, a fellow coach whom she later married, and the two recorded duets together that crossed between pop and country audiences. She released a Christmas album and continued to put out solo music, including singles and collaborations spanning pop, dance and country, and she performed in residency engagements in Las Vegas as well as touring and festival settings. She has also reunited with No Doubt for select live performances. Across band, solo, fashion and television work, Stefani remains an enduring figure in popular music and entertainment, recognized both for her songwriting and for an image that has influenced fashion and pop culture over several decades.
