Andrew Tate

Internet personality & former kickboxer

Born: December 14, 1986, Washington, D.C., U.S.
Known for: Professional kickboxing world titles, social media influence, Hustler's University

Andrew Tate is a British-American internet personality and former professional kickboxer who became one of the most widely discussed and polarising figures in online culture during the early 2020s. He first gained recognition as a championship kickboxer before transitioning to a career built around social media, online courses and commentary, and he has since been the subject of extensive media coverage and ongoing legal proceedings.

Early life

Tate was born on December 14, 1986, in Washington, D.C. His father, Emory Tate, was an American chess master, and his mother was British. After his parents separated, Tate moved with his mother and siblings, including his brother Tristan, to Luton, England, where he was raised. He took up combat sports as a young man and began competing in kickboxing in the mid-2000s, balancing training with early business ventures.

Career

Tate built his initial reputation in kickboxing, competing in Europe and winning multiple championships across his division during his competitive years. After retiring from the sport, he shifted toward online business and media. He appeared briefly on the British edition of the reality television series Big Brother in 2016 before leaving the show.

In the following years Tate developed a substantial online presence centred on themes of wealth, fitness, masculinity and self-improvement. He launched paid online programmes, most notably the venture marketed as Hustler's University, and his short-form clips circulated widely across platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and X. His commentary, particularly remarks concerning women and gender, drew sharp criticism and led to him being removed from several major social media platforms in 2022, though some accounts were later reinstated.

Recent work and legal matters

Tate's public profile in the mid-2020s has been shaped heavily by legal proceedings in Romania, where he and his brother were arrested in late 2022. Authorities brought charges including human trafficking and organised crime; the brothers have denied all allegations, and the cases have moved through the Romanian courts over an extended period, attracting significant international attention. Additional investigations and civil actions have been reported in other jurisdictions.

Throughout this period Tate has continued to publish content online and has remained a frequent subject of debate among commentators, educators and policymakers concerned with the influence of online personalities on young audiences. Supporters describe him as a motivational entrepreneur, while critics and a number of researchers have raised concerns about the messaging associated with his brand. He remains, regardless of viewpoint, one of the most recognisable and contested figures to emerge from the modern social media era.
