Aliko Dangote
Industrialist & entrepreneur
Aliko Dangote is a Nigerian businessman and industrialist, the founder and chairman of the Dangote Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Africa. Widely regarded as the richest person on the African continent, he built his fortune across cement, sugar, salt and other commodities, and has more recently invested heavily in oil refining and petrochemicals.
Early life
Dangote was born in Kano, in northern Nigeria, in 1957, into a prominent merchant family with a long history in trade. He was raised in an environment of commerce and business from an early age. He studied business and administration, including time at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, before returning to Nigeria to begin his own ventures.
Career
In the late 1970s, Dangote started trading in commodities, reportedly with financial backing from family, importing and distributing goods such as sugar, rice and cement. Over time he shifted his strategy from trading toward manufacturing and production within Nigeria, founding what became the Dangote Group. The company expanded into cement production, sugar refining, salt processing, flour and other consumer and industrial goods.
Dangote Cement grew into one of the largest cement producers on the continent, with operations and plants in multiple African countries, and became a publicly listed company on the Nigerian stock exchange whose value formed a large part of his wealth. His emphasis on domestic production was framed as a contribution to industrialization, job creation and reducing reliance on imports across the region. Over time, his diversified group of companies made him by far the wealthiest individual in Africa and one of the most influential business figures on the continent, frequently featured on global lists of billionaires.
Recent work
One of Dangote's most ambitious undertakings has been the Dangote Refinery, a large petroleum refining and petrochemical complex built near Lagos, Nigeria. The project, one of the largest of its kind in the world by capacity, began producing refined fuels in the mid-2020s and was positioned as a way to reduce Nigeria's dependence on imported petroleum products. Beyond business, Dangote is active in philanthropy through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which funds initiatives in health, nutrition, education and disaster relief, and he has pledged substantial resources to causes such as combating malnutrition. He remains an influential voice on economic development, industrial policy and investment in Africa, frequently arguing for greater local manufacturing and intra-African trade as practical paths to long-term economic growth.
