Known for combining commercial success with critically acclaimed dramatic roles, she has received several Filmfare Awards and is regularly cited among the leading actors of her generation in India.

Early life

Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993, in Mumbai into a prominent film family; her father is the filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and she comes from a background steeped in the Hindi film industry. She made an early childhood appearance in a film before pursuing acting as an adult. Growing up within the industry gave her early exposure to filmmaking, though she has spoken in interviews about working to establish her own identity as a performer.

Career

Bhatt made her adult debut as a lead in Karan Johar's "Student of the Year" (2012). She drew wider critical attention with "Highway" (2014), a road drama that showcased a more serious side of her acting. She went on to take on a range of roles in films such as "2 States," "Udta Punjab," for which she received significant acclaim, and "Dear Zindagi."

Her reputation as a dramatic actress was reinforced by "Raazi" (2018), in which she played an Indian spy, and by "Gully Boy" (2019). In 2022 she starred in "Gangubai Kathiawadi," a biographical drama directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that earned her further critical praise, and she appeared in S. S. Rajamouli's blockbuster "RRR," one of the highest-profile Indian films of its era. The same period saw her launch into production and take on projects aimed at international audiences.

Recent work

Bhatt made her Hollywood debut in the action film "Heart of Stone" (2023), expanding her career beyond Indian cinema. She also established a production company and has been involved in producing as well as acting. Off screen, she has built a substantial presence as a brand ambassador and entrepreneur, with ventures in fashion and children's products. She married actor Ranbir Kapoor and has continued to balance high-profile film work with her business and family life, remaining one of the most visible figures in contemporary Indian entertainment.

Over the course of the 2020s, Bhatt has been recognized as one of the highest-paid and most influential actresses in Hindi cinema, frequently appearing in lists of leading Indian celebrities and serving as the face of numerous national advertising campaigns. She has also drawn attention for choosing roles that center on complex female characters, a pattern that critics have cited as part of a broader shift in mainstream Indian filmmaking. Alongside her acting, her production and entrepreneurial ventures have positioned her as a businessperson as well as a performer, and she has spoken in interviews about wanting to build projects that extend beyond her own on-screen work.
