Ewan McGregor is a Scottish actor who became internationally known through a wide-ranging career in independent and mainstream film and, later, television. He first drew attention in British cinema of the 1990s, achieved global fame through a major franchise, and has since worked across genres, earning awards recognition for his television performances.

Early life

Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Scotland. He grew up in Crieff and developed an early interest in acting, encouraged in part by his uncle, the actor Denis Lawson. He left school as a teenager to pursue acting, working in regional theatre before training at a drama school in London, which led to early roles in British film and television.

Career

McGregor came to prominence through collaborations with director Danny Boyle, most notably as Mark Renton in Trainspotting (1996), a defining film of 1990s British cinema. He achieved worldwide recognition playing a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, beginning with The Phantom Menace (1999) and continuing through Revenge of the Sith (2005). He also starred in Baz Luhrmann's musical Moulin Rouge! (2001), demonstrating his singing as well as acting.

His filmography is notably varied, including Tim Burton's Big Fish (2003), the thriller Angels & Demons (2009), Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer (2010), and the drama Beginners (2010), the last of which co-starred Christopher Plummer in an Academy Award-winning performance. McGregor also pursued voice and animated work and took on stage roles, reflecting a deliberate effort to avoid being typecast despite his association with major franchises.

He moved successfully into prestige television, winning a Golden Globe for the third season of Fargo (2017), in which he played dual roles as two brothers, and an Emmy Award for the title role in the limited series Halston (2021), portraying the fashion designer. He also reprised Obi-Wan Kenobi in a streaming series in 2022, returning to the character that had brought him global fame more than two decades earlier.

Recent work

In recent years McGregor has continued to balance film and television, returning to the Star Wars universe and taking on character-driven projects across film and limited series. He has been involved in voice work and has pursued personal interests including motorcycle travel documentaries undertaken with a longtime friend, which have been released as television series. His career is marked by an unusually broad range, moving between gritty independent dramas, large studio franchises, musicals and award-winning limited series, and he remains widely recognized both for his early British work and his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
