Pro Ref Admits Error After Haaland's Derby Winner Sparks Controversy

Erling Haaland's 60th-minute strike handed Manchester City a stunning derby victory at Old Trafford — but the goal is now at the center of a major officiating controversy. Pro Ref, the Premier League's refereeing body, has formally admitted an "error of judgement" in letting the goal stand, according to BBC Sport.

What Actually Happened

Gvardiol whipped in a cross that deflected slightly off United full-back Patrick Dorgu before reaching Haaland at the back post. The goal was initially flagged offside against the Norwegian, but VAR overturned the call on the field — ruling Dorgu's boot kept Haaland onside.

The odd reality is that the goal was initially disallowed for the wrong reason. Haaland wasn't actually offside. But once VAR stepped in to correct that error, it failed to flag the legitimate concern — Fernandez's interference. The net result: a goal that probably should have been ruled out for offside was allowed to stand.

Carrick and United React

United boss Michael Carrick said he was flat-out "confused" by the sequence of decisions, and his players didn't hold back either. Martinez was particularly vocal, calling the outcome a flat-out "injustice."

"Every season they come to our club, explain the rules for an hour, look so confident — and then five or six people make these mistakes," Martinez said. "It's unacceptable. It's the best league in the world and we have to go home with this."

Pro Ref confirmed it contacted Manchester United directly that evening to acknowledge the mistake, with a formal review of the incident now underway.

The controversy didn't start with the goal. City had already been reduced to ten men in the 23rd minute when Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes while he was on the ground. Oliver didn't hesitate — it was a deserved dismissal.
