Norris Delivers 'One of My Best' in Hungary to Close F1's First Half

Lando Norris closed out the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season in style, winning the Hungarian Grand Prix in what he called one of the best drives of his career. Ferrari came into race day as favourites — and left with a long list of regrets.

One Mistake, Zero Panic

Norris converted pole into the lead at Turn One, but a misjudgement at Turn Two saw him slide wide and hand the position to team-mate Oscar Piastri. On a circuit where overtaking evenly matched cars is virtually impossible, that looked like a race-ending error.

It wasn't. Norris kept his composure and refused to panic, something his McLaren boss Andrea Stella highlighted as a sign of genuine maturity. Running in dirty air, Norris tracked Piastri within 0.8 seconds for close to 40 laps — and knew exactly what that meant.

Piastri might still have held on, but a clash with Carlos Sainz while lapping the Spaniard's Williams compromised his race. Ferrari's Costly Afternoon

Team boss Frederic Vasseur didn't mince words after the race, admitting his squad made "too many mistakes" on a day they needed to capitalise. It's a familiar pattern — Hamilton has been dealing with Ferrari's strategic inconsistencies since Austria, and the Hungaroring only added to that frustration.

Norris and McLaren, by contrast, were almost perfect once that Turn Two slip was behind them.

Hard Work, Not Just Talent

Norris was quick to credit the grind behind the result. He admitted this new generation of cars — with their demanding energy management systems — isn't to his liking, but he's adapted.

"I've worked on many areas from last year. I feel much more confident lately with how to extract performance," he said. "Hard work from my engineers and from myself to improve my driving. That is the answer."

Stellas backed that up, pointing to Norris as a driver who has sharpened his emotional control alongside his technical understanding since a period of deep self-reflection in the second half of last season — the run that ultimately delivered his world championship.

"Lando is much more confident. He's much more aware of his tools, how to deploy them. And he's more in control of his emotions," Stella said.

Championship Math and Measured Optimism

The win moves Norris to 98 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who has been the dominant force in 2026. But don't expect Norris to start talking title charge just yet.

"I'm just happy with today. It doesn't mean if I'm quick here, we're going to be quick everywhere," he said. "One thing I've learned is to have no expectations of the future and just to work in the present."

A second McLaren upgrade package is scheduled for the Dutch Grand Prix after F1's four-week summer break — so the second half of the season could look very different. For now, Norris heads into the holidays with momentum, confidence, and one more win in his pocket.
