The Most Dangerous Games, co-written with James Patterson, hit major bestseller charts in its first week — and a movie deal may be next.

Jimmy Donaldson — better known as MrBeast — has spent years proving that big audiences translate into big business, and his first novel appears to be following the same playbook. The Most Dangerous Games, co-written with thriller veteran James Patterson, debuted at No. 3 on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list in its opening week.

Where the Numbers Stand

Beyond the NYT placement, the book landed at No. 1 on Amazon's mystery, thriller, and suspense new-release chart and reached No. 2 in the action and adventure category on the same platform. It also cracked the USA Today top-10 bestseller list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Donaldson is additionally selling copies through his own website, though those sales aren't counted toward any of the official lists — meaning the public rankings likely understate total volume. Earlier signals had been mixed, so if you caught the pre-release skepticism around the book's early sales, the first-week chart performance is a meaningful turnaround.

What the Book Is Actually About

The premise leans hard into Donaldson's brand. A thousand people receive a mysterious invitation; a hundred are selected to compete in an extreme global contest with a billion-dollar prize on the line. The competition spans Antarctica, shark-filled Chilean waters, scorching desert, and pitch-black caves. Survival against the terrain is just the first problem — eventually, the other competitors become the real threat, as alliances collapse and trust becomes a liability. It reads, not coincidentally, a lot like a scaled-up version of what Donaldson already does on YouTube and on his Prime Video competition series Beast Games.

How the Collaboration Actually Worked

The origin story is straightforward. Patterson traveled to Greenville, North Carolina — where Donaldson lives and runs his operation — and the two hashed out the core concept during a walk around the property. From there, Patterson built the story outline and met with Donaldson weekly to go over drafts and sharpen the narrative. The process reportedly functioned partly as a writing mentorship, with Patterson walking Donaldson through character development, suspense pacing, and traditional story structure — craft areas that don't have obvious parallels in YouTube video production.

It's a logical pairing on paper. Patterson is one of the most commercially reliable names in genre fiction, and Donaldson brings a fanbase that dwarfs most media properties. He has 515 million subscribers on YouTube alone. The promotional strategy matched that reality: the two pushed the book on social media, including a YouTube Short titled "Read My Book, You Could Win $1,000,000" — which, again, fits neatly into Donaldson's established formula of audience engagement through cash incentives. His broader philanthropic and brand-building efforts show he's comfortable operating at scale across different verticals.

Film Rights Are in Play

Sources familiar with Donaldson's company confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that there are active discussions around selling film rights to The Most Dangerous Games. Nothing has been announced, and it's worth applying the standard skepticism to early-stage Hollywood talks — most don't close, and fewer still make it to production. That said, a survival-competition thriller with a built-in global fanbase and a premise that's already been audience-tested through years of YouTube content is exactly the kind of package that generates serious interest.

What to Make of It

Donaldson has made a habit of expanding into adjacent spaces — food, gaming content, philanthropy, streaming — and books are the latest extension. His creative range keeps widening, and the first-week data suggests his audience is willing to follow him into new formats. Whether the novel holds up as a reading experience independent of the MrBeast brand is a separate question, but as a market experiment, the early results are hard to argue with.
