Preorders for 'The Most Dangerous Games,' co-written with James Patterson, are reportedly only in the four-digit range — not a good sign.

MrBeast's Debut Novel Is Barely Moving Copies Before It Even Ships

Jimmy Donaldson — better known as MrBeast — has built one of the largest audiences in internet history, but that reach doesn't appear to be translating to book sales. His debut thriller, co-written with bestselling author James Patterson, is struggling to generate meaningful preorder numbers ahead of its release.

What the Numbers Actually Show

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources familiar with the project told the outlet Semafor that The Most Dangerous Games is "on track to be a historic bomb." As of last week, preorders were sitting somewhere in the four digits — a number described as a small fraction of what publisher HarperCollins would need to justify the fees paid to both Patterson and Donaldson. By Monday, the book had landed at No. 18 on Amazon's new releases list, which sounds respectable until you remember that the chart refreshes frequently and high placement there doesn't necessarily reflect strong absolute sales.

HarperCollins has not publicly commented on the figures.

What the Book Is Actually About

The premise leans hard into MrBeast's established formula. According to the book's official description, a thousand strangers receive a mysterious invitation, one hundred are selected to compete, and the stakes are a billion dollars to the last person standing. The competition runs through some of the world's most extreme environments — Antarctic ice, shark-infested Chilean waters, scorching desert, and pitch-black caves — with no rescue available. Eventually the landscape itself becomes less dangerous than the other players.

It reads essentially like a MrBeast challenge video scaled up to novel length and filtered through Patterson's thriller structure. Whether that concept works on the page is a separate question from whether it can sell, and right now the market is giving a fairly clear early answer.

The Promotion Strategy Isn't Subtle

Donaldson has 515 million subscribers on YouTube, and he and Patterson have been pushing the book across social media. One YouTube short is literally titled "Read My Book, You Could Win $1,000,000" — which fits neatly with the giveaway-driven content model that made MrBeast famous enough to marry into celebrity status in the first place. The idea is presumably that the chance to win money would drive purchases the same way it drives clicks. So far, that logic hasn't visibly moved the needle.

This is an interesting contrast to how Donaldson's philanthropic ventures have performed in terms of public goodwill — projects like TeamWater's clean water initiative generated genuine enthusiasm. A commercial product tied to a prize giveaway is a different proposition, and audiences may be responding differently.

Why This Matters Beyond the Book Itself

The bigger question here isn't really about one novel — it's about whether massive online followings reliably convert into other revenue streams. MrBeast has built an audience in the hundreds of millions by giving things away, producing spectacle, and keeping content free. Asking that audience to spend money on a physical book is a meaningfully different transaction.

Patterson is the most commercially successful thriller writer alive, which makes the low preorder numbers more striking. His name alone typically moves significant volume. If the combination of his brand and Donaldson's billion-plus followers across platforms can't generate strong preorders, it raises real questions about what the "creator economy" can and can't do outside of its native platforms.

This is the kind of experiment that will get studied regardless of how the final sales numbers land. It's one data point, but it's a notable one — and publishers, agents, and anyone thinking about cross-platform media deals will be watching how the actual release week plays out.
