Liam Neeson's 'The Fix' Arrives on Streaming After Modest Box Office Run

The Iran-set action-thriller starring Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi has moved to PVOD following a brief and underwhelming theatrical run.

Liam Neeson has long occupied a peculiar corner of contemporary action cinema — an actor of genuine classical training who, somewhere in his late fifties, reinvented himself as one of the genre's most reliable practitioners. His latest effort, The Fix, has now arrived on the PVOD market, completing a theatrical-to-streaming journey that was, by most commercial measures, a difficult one.
A CIA Agent, Iran, and Hidden Millions
At its narrative core, The Fix follows a CIA operative who covertly enters Iran on a mission to recover funds that his mentor stashed in the country decades earlier, during the hostage crisis. The premise takes on additional weight when the agent becomes entangled with Iranian women desperate to escape the constraints of their circumstances, elevating the story — at least in concept — beyond a straightforward treasure-hunt thriller. Neeson stars alongside Zachary Levi, whose involvement in the project adds a somewhat unexpected dimension given his broader profile in studio tentpole filmmaking.
The Iranian hostage crisis, of course, is not new territory for prestige cinema. Ben Affleck's Argo — produced on approximately $44 million and released in 2012 — used the same historical backdrop to construct a taut, politically grounded thriller that ultimately took home the Academy Award for Best Picture and grossed well over $230 million worldwide. The Fix arrives in that film's shadow, and the comparison is not a flattering one for the newer production.
Box Office Performance and Critical Reception
The film's theatrical run generated just $1.1 million globally, a figure that falls short even by the modest standards of mid-budget action releases. That number looks even more telling when placed beside the $3 million earned by Levi's concurrent theatrical release, the Western drama Angel and the Badman — itself considered a disappointment. Neither project has given the actor the commercial foothold he might have hoped for outside of his more prominent franchise work.
Critically, the reception has been equally unforgiving. The Fix currently holds a 16% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers noting not only structural and tonal shortcomings but also what many described as particularly unfortunate timing, given its release coincided with escalating tensions surrounding the Iran War. When geopolitical reality collides with fictional dramatization in ways that feel unearned or clumsy, audiences and critics alike tend to respond accordingly.
For Neeson, this is far from the first time a streaming pivot has followed a limited theatrical window — it has become something of a recognizable rhythm in this phase of his career. His continued output remains considerable, and his upcoming thriller The Mongoose, notably directed by his own stuntman, suggests he shows no signs of slowing down.
Finding Its Audience on PVOD
According to Collider, The Fix debuted in the top 20 on the domestic Amazon streaming leaderboard in its opening week on the PVOD market, tracking data from FlixPatrol indicates. While it faced stiff competition — most notably from Alan Ritchson's Runner, which landed on the same day and quickly emerged as one of the more dominant titles across Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu charts — The Fix did manage to outperform several recent genre titles, including Fall 2: Deadpoint and The Uprising.
It is worth noting that PVOD performance and theatrical performance often tell very different stories. Films that struggle to command multiplex screens can still find engaged audiences at home, where the rental proposition lowers the stakes for the viewer considerably. Whether The Fix locates that audience over a sustained period remains to be seen, but its early chart placement at least suggests some level of organic discovery.
The broader streaming landscape continues to reshape how mid-budget action films live or die commercially — a phenomenon also illustrated by titles like Hugh Jackman's The Sheep Detectives, which became a notable Prime Video hit despite a similarly modest theatrical profile. For Neeson, the hope will be that The Fix finds its footing in living rooms in ways it could not quite manage at the box office.
