Known for: Schindler's List, Taken, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Michael Collins

Liam Neeson is a Northern Irish actor whose career spans prestige drama, historical epics and action thrillers. Acclaimed for his lead role in Schindler's List and later widely known for the Taken series, he is among the most recognizable actors of his generation.

Early life

William John Neeson was born on June 7, 1952, in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He grew up in a working-class Catholic family and took up amateur boxing as a youth. He studied at Queen's University Belfast and worked a series of jobs before joining the Lyric Players' Theatre in Belfast in the late 1970s. He went on to perform with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, where his stage work attracted the attention of filmmakers.

Career

Neeson's film career advanced through the 1980s with roles in Excalibur and The Mission, and he gained further recognition in dramas such as Husbands and Wives and Schindler's List (1993), in which he played the German industrialist Oskar Schindler. The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and established him as a leading dramatic actor. He starred as the Irish revolutionary in Michael Collins (1996), for which he won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, and played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999).

In the 2000s Neeson appeared in films including Gangs of New York, Kinsey, Batman Begins and Love Actually, and lent his voice to Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia films. He also became known for his distinctive deep voice, which he has used in narration and animated roles. A major shift came with Taken (2008), an action thriller in which he played a former operative searching for his kidnapped daughter; its success was unexpected for an actor primarily known for drama, and it reinvented him as a star of the genre well into his fifties and sixties.

Recent work

Following Taken and its sequels, Neeson became a fixture of action cinema, headlining films such as The Grey, Non-Stop, Run All Night, Cold Pursuit and The Commuter, while continuing to take dramatic roles in films like Silence and A Monster Calls. He has remained highly prolific, often releasing multiple films a year across thrillers and character pieces, and has become one of the most reliable leads in the mid-budget action genre. Neeson has spoken publicly about the loss of his wife, the actress Natasha Richardson, who died in 2009, and about how work helped him cope. He has received numerous honors over his career, including a BAFTA nomination and recognition for his contributions to film, and continues to work steadily in the industry into his seventies.
