Leclerc Wins Chaotic British GP as Antonelli's Lead Crumbles

Charles Leclerc ended a lengthy personal drought at Silverstone on Sunday, steering Ferrari to a dramatic British Grand Prix win as championship leader Kimi Antonelli imploded with a technical failure that turned the title race on its head.

Leclerc Gets the Job Done Early

Leclerc had been struggling for race pace in recent weekends, so Saturday's qualifying session felt like a turning point. He edged Lewis Hamilton to second on the grid, and when Antonelli stumbled off the line, the Monegasque pounced immediately — leading into Turn 1 and never truly relinquishing that position. As reported by Sky Sports, Hamilton and Leclerc linked up beautifully at the start, with the Brit slotting behind his Ferrari team-mate to help build a four-second buffer before Antonelli eventually worked his way past Hamilton on lap 11.

Ferrari pitted Leclerc on lap 25 as Antonelli remained out on fresher rubber and began closing fast. The Mercedes had the straight-line speed to make a pass almost inevitable — and then everything changed.

Antonelli's Race Unravels

With 11 laps to go and the gap under three seconds, Antonelli looked like a certain winner. Then he reported a sudden problem. The culprit? A broken front-left wheel shield, likely triggered by clipping the kerb hard at Copse corner. Two emergency pit stops later, he had dropped to 10th and was barely able to keep the car pointing straight.

The 19-year-old bravely tried to limp home for a point, but the steering was compromised throughout. He crossed the line in ninth — only to be slapped with a five-second penalty for repeated track-limit violations while fighting to control the damaged car, bumping him all the way to 16th.

His title lead, which had ballooned to 66 points after a fifth straight win in Monaco on June 7, now sits at just 25 points over George Russell — a staggering swing across two retirements in three races.

Russell Grabs an Unlikely Second

Russell had been off the pace all weekend, but Ferrari handed him a gift. When Max Verstappen spun out with four laps remaining and triggered a late Safety Car, Ferrari called Hamilton in for fresh tyres — a call that cost him time and position. Russell, who had stayed out, inherited second place.

Red Bull had already been dealing with their own Verstappen headaches heading into this weekend, and the crash at Silverstone only added to the chaos at the sharp end of the grid.

Hamilton held on to third despite serving an earlier five-second penalty for a false start and surviving a post-race investigation over a yellow-flag infringement. The result moves him to within 32 points of Antonelli in the standings.

Safety Car Controversy Clouds the Finish

The closing laps produced their own drama off the track. The race director initially indicated the Safety Car would peel in at the end of the penultimate lap, setting up a one-lap shootout. That message was then reversed, leaving the field bunched behind the Safety Car until the final corners — with overtaking off the table. The crowd made their feelings known with loud boos. The FIA later confirmed the misleading announcement was down to a software error.

For Leclerc, none of that mattered in the end. His victory — his first since the 2024 United States Grand Prix — gives Ferrari back-to-back wins across three races following Hamilton's triumph in Barcelona that snapped a 20-month winless run. The Constructors' gap between the two teams has now tightened to 78 points in Mercedes' favour.

Midfield Notes

Lando Norris secured fourth for McLaren, making it three British drivers in the top four alongside Russell and Hamilton. Racing Bulls had a standout afternoon with Liam Lawson sixth and Arvid Lindblad seventh. Gabriel Bortoleto took eighth for Audi in his best result of 2025, with Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly rounding out the points.

The title fight is very much alive — and Silverstone just rewrote the script completely.
