Los Angeles is aggressively exploring trades this offseason to deliver on its promise of a major splash around Luka Doncic, including a high-end center.

Lakers Chase Trades to Build a Contender Around Luka Doncic

A Promise The Lakers Intend To Keep

There is a difference between saying the right things in an introductory press conference and actually delivering on them, and the Los Angeles Lakers appear determined to land on the right side of that line. According to Yahoo Sports, the franchise is working the phones this offseason in search of trades that would meaningfully upgrade the roster around Luka Doncic, the superstar guard the team acquired from Dallas in one of the most stunning deals in recent NBA memory.

The motivation is rooted in a commitment made when Doncic first arrived. Yahoo, citing ESPN's Dave McMenamin, reported that the Lakers told Doncic "they would make a major splash during the 2026 offseason." Pledges like that have a way of defining a front office, and Los Angeles has signaled it has no intention of letting this one quietly expire.

What Los Angeles Is Actually Hunting

The shape of the search is becoming clearer. Per Yahoo, the Lakers are chasing either "a game-changing two-way perimeter stud" or a frontcourt upgrade, a dual mandate that suggests the front office wants to strengthen more than one spot rather than settle for a single splashy addition. ESPN's Shams Charania reinforced the point, noting that "the Lakers are actively exploring trade scenarios utilizing their cap space to improve the roster."

Those priorities line up neatly with the kind of help a guard of Doncic's profile tends to thrive alongside:

  • An athletic, rim-running center who can finish lobs and punish defenses in the pick-and-roll
  • Dependable perimeter shooting to keep the floor spaced for his drives and kickouts
  • A secondary ball handler who can create offense when Doncic rests or draws extra attention

The pursuit of a more dynamic big man, in particular, has fueled speculation that the Lakers could be willing to part with current center depth to land an upgrade better suited to playing off Doncic's gravity.

Keeping The Core Together

The trade chase is only one half of the plan. Yahoo noted that the Lakers are equally focused on retaining the nucleus already in place, pointing to the expected return of guard Austin Reaves on a lucrative new contract. Keeping Reaves as Doncic's backcourt partner would preserve continuity and shooting while the front office hunts for the bigger pieces, and it reflects a belief that the foundation does not need to be torn down so much as reinforced.

That balancing act, adding star-level talent without gutting the supporting cast, is the central challenge of the summer. Cap space and tradeable salary only stretch so far, and every team in the league knows the Lakers are motivated buyers, which rarely improves a negotiating position.

A Test Of Ambition

Yahoo described the Lakers as still early in the process but firmly in attack mode, intent on being "aggressive this summer" as they try to assemble a genuine contender. For a franchise that measures its seasons in championships rather than playoff appearances, anything less than a serious upgrade would feel like a missed opportunity given the talent already on the roster.

For Doncic, who joined one of basketball's most storied organizations with expectations to match, the coming weeks amount to a real test of whether words translate into action. He has been open about the kind of help he wants, and the front office has openly promised to provide it. As Yahoo framed it, the clock is ticking on the Lakers to surround their cornerstone with the talent he has asked for before patience, and opportunity, begin to run thin.

A real center next to Luka would be terrifying, finally some pick-and-roll that makes sense.

I'll believe the big splash when it actually happens. The Lakers love leaking trade rumors every offseason and then signing some veteran minimum guy in August. Show me the signed paperwork, not the aggressive exploring.

Whatever they do, please don't gut all the young assets for one center.
