At least eight people were killed and dozens wounded as Russia unleashed a second major missile and drone assault on Kyiv in under a week.

Klitschko's Kyiv Rocked by Deadly Ballistic Missile Barrage

Russia hammered the Kyiv region with ballistic missiles and drones early Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding more than 34 others. Mayor Vitali Klitschko — the former heavyweight boxing champion turned wartime leader — was on the ground directing rescue operations as the city braced for more.

The Overnight Assault

The strike hit apartment blocks and residential buildings across the capital and surrounding areas, according to The Guardian World. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv region's military administration, confirmed via Telegram that ballistic missiles were specifically used in the attack — weapons designed to be faster and harder to intercept than conventional cruise missiles.

Seven fatalities were recorded inside Kyiv itself, with one additional death reported in Bucha district to the northwest — the same area that became a symbol of the war's brutality in its early stages. Dozens more were left wounded across the wider region.

Klitschko Urges Calm, Keeps People in Shelters

Klitschko moved fast. The mayor confirmed air defence systems were active throughout the assault and urged all residents to stay in shelters until the all-clear was given. Rescue crews were pulling survivors from collapsed and shattered structures well into the morning hours.

It's the second major attack on the capital and its surrounding region in less than a week — a pace that signals a deliberate escalation. For a city that has endured more than four years of full-scale war, the back-to-back strikes represent a grim new intensity. Klitschko, who once dominated opponents in the ring much like Conor McGregor has dominated headlines in combat sports, now fights a very different kind of battle — one without a final bell.

Timing Is No Accident

The assault landed on the eve of a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey — and that timing is hard to ignore. US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to meet on the sidelines of the summit, with the ongoing war front and centre on the agenda.

For Russia, striking Kyiv the night before those talks is a calculated message. For Ukraine, it's additional leverage — fresh footage of residential buildings turned to rubble arrives just as diplomats gather around the negotiating table.

Ukraine Hits Back

This isn't a one-sided exchange. Ukraine has ramped up its own long-range strike campaign, increasingly targeting energy infrastructure inside Russian-controlled territory. A Ukrainian strike near Sevastopol in Russian-annexed Crimea temporarily knocked out electricity supplies to the city, according to its governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev.

Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, also reported that multiple waves of Ukrainian drones were intercepted before reaching the Russian capital. Both sides are swinging hard.

The Ground War Grinds On

Beyond the aerial battles, the fight for Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region remains a flashpoint. Russia claimed on Friday it had seized the strategically important town — a gateway to key Ukrainian defensive positions — but Kyiv flatly denied it, calling the announcement a lie.

Zelenskyy pushed back in his nightly address, saying Ukrainian troops were still actively defending the town and mocking Vladimir Putin's premature victory claim. "He will never dare to appear there," Zelenskyy said.

Just as Nadal acknowledged the end of an era by ruling out a comeback, Putin may be declaring wins that the ground reality doesn't yet support.

By the Numbers

  • 8 — total killed across Kyiv and surrounding regions
  • 34+ — wounded in the strike
  • 2 — major attacks on Kyiv in under a week
  • 4+ years — duration of Russia's full-scale invasion

With the NATO summit now underway and the diplomatic pressure building, Monday's attack ensures the war stays at the top of every agenda. Klitschko and his city have survived another brutal night — but the fight is far from over.
