Grey's Anatomy Has No End Date — and a Texas Spinoff Is Coming

Showrunner Meg Marinis says no one's told her when Grey's will wrap, and Ellen Pompeo is already exec producing its next spinoff.

Season 23 of Grey's Anatomy is here, Meredith is back in her scrubs, and — surprise — the show has absolutely no retirement plans. Showrunner Meg Marinis opened up about the state of TV's most enduring medical drama, and honestly, it sounds like Grey Sloan Memorial is going to outlive us all.
Nobody's Pulling the Plug on Grey's Anytime Soon
If you've been bracing yourself for a farewell season announcement, you can relax — for now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marinis confirmed that she hasn't received a single word about when the series might take its final bow. "I always ask and they're like, 'Not now!'" she shared, adding that any end-of-series decision sounds like it would be made collaboratively with creator Shonda Rhimes. Given everything the show has meant to ABC and its studio, it makes sense that everyone wants to get that moment exactly right — and apparently, they're nowhere near ready to have that conversation.
For Marinis, running a show deep into its twenties means always wanting to stay a step ahead. Knowing when the finish line is coming matters for storytelling. But for now, the horizon looks wide open.
Meredith's Back, and Season 23 Is Already Full of Threads
The season 23 premiere, titled "Collide," picked up a month after the emotional Season 22 finale that ended with wedding bells for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Nick (Scott Speedman). Ellen Pompeo slipped back into the role with ease, and the episode wasted no time setting up a web of storylines to carry viewers through the weeks ahead. The departures of fan favorites Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) still cast a shadow, and the premiere's closing moments left plenty of questions hanging in the air.
Marinis also used the episode to dig into themes she clearly cares about — specifically, the gap between those who have access to top-tier healthcare and those who don't. It's a thread that connects directly to the show's next big chapter.
A Texas Spinoff Is in the Works — and Ellen Pompeo Is Involved
Here's the exciting news for anyone who's ever wanted Grey's to pack its bags and head somewhere completely different: a brand-new spinoff is coming in the 2026–2027 TV season. Set at a rural West Texas medical center — described as "the last chance for care before miles of nowhere" — the untitled show will be co-created and written by Marinis and Rhimes. And in a sign of just how invested the Grey's universe is in this project, Ellen Pompeo is also on board as an executive producer.
For Marinis, who grew up in Houston, this one is personal. She's long been fascinated by what she calls "medical deserts" — communities where quality healthcare is miles away and the stakes of every visit are completely different from what we see in a sleek Seattle hospital. "There's so much going on there that I haven't seen on TV," she said, noting that she and her team are already deep into research, talking to real communities and pulling from true stories out of rural West Texas.
Lessons Learned, Franchise Expanding
With Private Practice and Station 19 as predecessors, the Grey's world has a solid track record with spinoffs. Marinis says both shows left good lessons behind — primarily that dedicated fan bases absolutely follow these characters beyond the mothership. The Texas project, though, sounds like a deliberate tonal shift: smaller in scale, grittier in subject matter, and rooted in a part of America that rarely gets this kind of spotlight.
Marinis is juggling both shows simultaneously, leaning on her Grey's team while developing the spinoff alongside Rhimes. The scheduling puzzle is still being worked out, but she's clear that she wants both series to feel equally supported when they eventually air side by side.
Twenty-three seasons in, Grey's Anatomy isn't coasting — it's actively building. And with Pompeo producing the next chapter of the franchise, it's clear this world still has a lot of story left to tell.
