RuPaul

RuPaul, born RuPaul Andre Charles, is an American drag performer, television host, recording artist, and producer. He is widely credited with bringing drag culture into the mainstream and is best known as the creator, host, and head judge of the reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race, which has won numerous Emmy Awards and grown into an international franchise.

Early life

RuPaul was born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. He spent part of his youth in San Diego before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, as a young adult, where he became involved in the city's performance and club scene. During this period he developed his stage persona and worked across music, film, and live performance in the local underground and alternative arts communities.

Career

RuPaul gained national attention in the early 1990s, achieving commercial success with the single 'Supermodel (You Better Work),' which became a club and chart hit and helped make him one of the most recognizable drag performers in the United States. He went on to release additional music, host a talk show, work as a model and spokesperson, and appear in film and television, building a public profile that bridged mainstream entertainment and LGBTQ+ culture.

His most influential work came with the launch of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2009.
