Doug Ellin Calls Jake Paul's New Ad a Cheap Knockoff

Jake Paul has found himself in the crosshairs of Doug Ellin, the mind behind HBO's beloved series Entourage. Ellin is not holding back his disappointment over Paul’s new commercial for the Betr app, which features Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier seemingly reprising their iconic roles as Ari Gold and Vincent Chase.

The Controversial Ad

The ad showcases Piven's character searching for Grenier's Vincent at a luxurious mansion party. As awkward and meta as it sounds, the ad leans heavily on the familiar language and outfits fans remember from the series. While the nostalgia factor sent the commercial viral, it wasn't enough to win over its original creator.

Doug Ellin's Reaction

Doug Ellin expressed his strong disapproval via social media, stating, "Many people worked really hard to make our show as good as it was. When I see cheap, sh**** imitations that try to pass for what we did it makes me puke." He was flooded with messages from fans hoping to vent their frustrations, saying he received around 400 comments about what he called a “god-awful commercial.” Ellin emphasized that he had no involvement with the ad's production.

This past SAW alludes to the ongoing struggle between creators and advertisers. Ellin stressed that his concerns aren't just about artistic integrity but also about fair recognition for the hard work behind Entourage. He lamented, “I watch it and I want to throw up...because I would suffer, along with many other people, over every syllable, every f***ing word.”

Who's to Blame?

Ellin also took aim at Piven, remarking on the actor's past reluctance to embrace his role. He quipped, "I actually had to beg Piven to do the show because he didn’t wanna do it. And he didn’t wanna talk about it afterwards. But now he’s back on it, because he’s getting paid." Clearly, he's less than impressed with Piven's return to the spotlight, especially in a manner that seems to capitalize on a legacy he finds disrespectful.

Reactions from Betr

The commercial has drawn mixed responses, but a spokesperson for Betr defended the project, calling it an attempt to create an unexpected cultural moment. They stated, "Creating that kind of unexpected cultural moment with two amazing actors was exactly what we wanted for Betr 2.0." They also mentioned the ad had seen nearly 10 million organic views in just a day.

Doug Ellin's Continued Criticism

Ellin's rebuttal continued on social media, where he made it clear that he finds the entire situation infuriating. "I have zero positivity in watching things I busted my ass [off] on for years [be] turned into garbage," he tweeted, urging any aspiring creators to produce original content instead of relying on borrowed ideas.

If only it were that simple, right?

Ellin wrapped up his thoughts by responding to fans suggesting a reboot of Entourage. To those fans, he commented, "Piven should write and direct. I can’t wait to watch." Quite the take from someone still showing signs of a passionate connection to his original work.

While Jake Paul continues to navigate the spotlight and controversy, the fallout from this ad serves as a reminder of the thin line between homage and imitation. Can it really be called tribute if it earns the scorn of those who helped build the original?
