Novak Djokovic overcame a slow start and apparent fitness struggles to beat wildcard Yunchaokete Bu 4-6 7-6 6-2 in Beijing, extending a stunning 31-match winning streak.

Djokovic Grinds Out China Open Win Despite Fitness Concerns

Novak Djokovic showed exactly why he remains the toughest out in the game, battling through clear fitness concerns to pull off a gutsy three-set comeback at the China Open in Beijing on Friday. The Serbian legend beat Chinese wildcard Yunchaokete Bu — ranked 104th in the world — 4-6 7-6(2) 6-2, keeping one of sport's most remarkable records alive.

The 31-Match Record Nobody Is Talking About Enough

This result pushed Djokovic's winning streak at the China Open to a staggering 31 consecutive matches. That kind of dominance at a single tournament is almost impossible to comprehend, and it's the kind of number that defines a legacy. A Rocky Road Through the First Two Sets

This was no cruise control performance. Bu came out aggressive, pushing Djokovic to save three break points at 3-3 in the opening set before eventually breaking through to claim the first set 6-4. The 37-year-old looked uncomfortable at times — a theme that has followed him through both of his Beijing matches so far, according to Sky Sports.

The second set went all the way to a tiebreak, but that's where Djokovic flipped the script. Despite needing courtside treatment and looking visibly fatigued, he locked in and dominated the tiebreak 7-2, swinging momentum decisively in his favor.

"I had to play very well and serve well in the right moments," Djokovic said after the match. "He was so solid and I struggled to really find holes in his game."

Third Set Dominance Closes It Out

Once Djokovic smelled blood in the deciding set, it was vintage Nole. He raced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, closing out the match to book a quarter-final spot. That kind of mental resilience — absorbing pressure, then detonating — is something Djokovic has displayed all season long against the very best competition.

His next opponent will be either Alexander Zverev or Juncheng Shang, a matchup that should provide a serious test of whether his body holds up deeper into the draw.

Fitness Questions Won't Go Away

Djokovic revealed an ongoing health condition back in August but insisted he felt fine heading into this week's event. Friday's match — like his first-round win over Nuno Borges — told a slightly different story. He looked labored at moments, and the mid-match treatment break raised eyebrows in the stands.

The good news is he's finding ways to win regardless. That's the hallmark of a champion who has been doing this at the highest level for two decades.

Elsewhere in Beijing

The rest of the China Open draw continued to take shape on Friday. Aryna Sabalenka rolled through Renata Zarazua 6-1 6-3 in just over an hour, looking every bit the dominant world No. 2 she's been all season. She'll face Nikola Bartunkova in the next round.

Naomi Osaka had to grind for it, dropping the second set before steadying herself to beat Maria Timofeeva 6-3 3-6 6-3 and advance to round three.

On the losing side, Katie Boulter fell to Karolina Muchova 7-6(3) 6-1 — the third time this season Muchova has gotten the better of the Brit. Boulter led 4-1 in the opener but couldn't hold it together, and Muchova's quality ultimately proved decisive.

In Tokyo at the Japan Open, Artur Fils beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3 7-5 to push through to the quarter-finals.

What's Next for Djokovic

The quarter-final awaits, and whether Djokovic faces Zverev or the young Chinese talent Shang, it will be a genuine test. His fitness has to improve if he's going to go deep in this draw. But count him out at your own risk — this is a player who has turned improbable wins into a career-long habit.
