Brian Madjo Scores on Villa Debut After Eight-Month Registration Fight

Brian Madjo's Aston Villa debut was a long time coming. After 212 days stuck in a regulatory dispute, the 17-year-old striker finally got his chance in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris St-Germain — and he made it count with a goal, even as Villa fell 2-1 in Salzburg.

The Registration Mess, Explained

Madjo joined Villa from French club Metz in January for around £10 million, but FIFA's rules on international transfers involving players under 18 immediately created a problem. Under those rules, clubs generally cannot complete cross-border moves for minor players. Villa's argument was that Madjo, despite holding three caps for Luxembourg in friendlies, was born in London and should qualify for an exemption as a British-born player.

FIFA didn't see it that way initially. The club took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July, and the ruling came down in Villa's favor just eight days before the Super Cup match, according to BBC Sport. Madjo was added to the squad for Salzburg almost immediately after the decision.

What He Actually Did on the Pitch

With Ollie Watkins rested following World Cup duty — England finished third in that tournament, with Watkins and Ezri Konsa both involved — Emery handed the teenager the starting role up front. The 6ft 4in forward had scored four goals in pre-season, so this wasn't a blind gamble.

Madjo's goal came from a John McGinn cross that he met on the volley, holding off PSG's Ecuadorian centre-back Willian Pacho in the process. It cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opener for PSG. He also missed a free header from close range and fired one wide before his goal, but kept causing problems for a PSG backline that included Marquinhos, a Brazilian international with 11 Ligue 1 titles to his name.

He was substituted off with around 18 minutes left, replaced by Tammy Abraham, as PSG's Desire Doue scored a VAR-confirmed winner.

Emery's Read on the Situation

Villa manager Unai Emery didn't frame Madjo's inclusion purely as a reward for the goal tally. He pointed to the teenager's defensive work rate and tactical discipline as the reasons he started. That's a fairly telling detail — it suggests Emery sees Madjo as someone who can be integrated into a structured system, not just a raw finisher being given a run-out.

Former Villa striker Dion Dublin noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that Madjo's response to his missed chances early in the game was mature. Rather than withdrawing from the action after the misses, he kept getting into dangerous positions — which is exactly what you want from a striker at any level, let alone a 17-year-old against the reigning Champions League holders.

Where This Leaves Villa's Striker Situation

Villa have reportedly been tracking Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson as a potential signing this summer. Madjo's performance doesn't necessarily take Jackson off the table, but it does give Emery an in-house option he may not have fully anticipated using this early. Watkins remains the first choice once he returns from his post-World Cup break, but having a teenager capable of contributing at this level is a genuinely useful position for the club.

On the England front, Madjo is currently an Under-17 international with four goals in nine appearances.
