Known for: Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Emilia Perez

Zoe Saldana is an American actress who has become one of the most commercially successful performers in film history through her starring roles in several of the highest-grossing franchises ever made. Known for blending physical, action-driven performances with dramatic depth, she has worked across science fiction, fantasy and independent cinema, and won an Academy Award for her work in a musical drama.

Early life

Zoe Yadira Saldana Nazario was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1978, to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. After her father died in an accident, she spent part of her childhood in the Dominican Republic, where she trained in dance. She returned to the United States and joined a theatre group in New York, developing her craft through stage performance before moving into film.

Career

Saldana made an early impression in the dance drama "Center Stage" (2000) and appeared in films such as "Crossroads" (2002) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" (2003). Her career reached a new level when she was cast in major science-fiction projects: she played Nyota Uhura in J. J. Abrams's "Star Trek" (2009) and its sequels, and Neytiri in James Cameron's "Avatar" (2009), which became the highest-grossing film of all time.

She then joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gamora in "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and its sequels, as well as the "Avengers" films, including "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," further cementing her status as a franchise star. Her work across the "Avatar," "Star Trek" and Marvel series made her one of the few performers to anchor three blockbuster franchises simultaneously. She also took roles in films including the action thriller "Colombiana" (2011) and the drama "Out of the Furnace" (2013), balancing large-scale spectacle with smaller character pieces.

Recent work

Saldana reprised her role as Neytiri in "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022) and has continued her involvement in Cameron's planned sequels. In 2024 she starred in Jacques Audiard's Spanish-language musical crime drama "Emilia Perez," a performance that earned widespread acclaim and won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has also moved into television and producing, developing projects through her own production company and starring in the espionage drama series "Lioness." With her films having collectively grossed billions of dollars worldwide, she is frequently cited among the highest-grossing actors in cinema history, and she has used her platform to advocate for greater Latino representation in Hollywood.
