Born: February 20, 1984, Johannesburg, South Africa
Known for: Host of The Daily Show, memoir Born a Crime, stand-up comedy

Trevor Noah is a South African comedian, writer, and television host best known for hosting the American satirical news program The Daily Show. He built an international career in stand-up comedy and is also the author of a widely praised memoir.

Early life

Noah was born on February 20, 1984, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a Black South African mother and a white European father at a time when their relationship was illegal under the country's apartheid laws. He has described this background extensively in his memoir, Born a Crime, which recounts his childhood under apartheid and its aftermath. He began working in South African entertainment as a young man, taking on roles in radio, television, and stand-up comedy.

Career

Noah established himself as a leading comedian in South Africa before expanding internationally, performing stand-up across Africa, Europe, and the United States. He drew attention for material that addressed race, identity, language, and politics, often drawing on his own multicultural upbringing.

In 2015 he succeeded Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show on the American network Comedy Central. Taking over a well-established and influential program, Noah developed his own approach, blending political satire with an international perspective and interviews with public figures. During his tenure the show expanded its presence on digital and social platforms, reaching large online audiences. He hosted the program for about seven years before departing in the early 2020s.

Recent work

Since leaving The Daily Show, Noah has continued to perform stand-up comedy on international tours and has taken on hosting and production roles, including hosting major awards ceremonies such as the Grammy Awards. He has also developed a podcast and remained active as a producer of comedy and documentary projects.

His memoir, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, was a critical and commercial success, spending an extended period on best-seller lists and being used in educational settings for its portrayal of life under and after apartheid. A young-readers edition was also published, and the book has been widely adopted in schools and reading programs.

Noah has been recognized with industry awards for his television and audio work, including honors for his podcast and his hosting of major live ceremonies. Multilingual and known for his facility with accents and languages, he has built an act that moves easily between commentary on global politics, race, and culture and more personal observational material. He is regarded as a prominent global comedic voice, noted for combining accessible humor with thoughtful commentary on social and political issues, and for bringing an outsider's perspective to American late-night television during a period of significant political change in the United States.
