Lorde
Singer & songwriter
Lorde, born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter known for her distinctive vocal style, introspective lyrics and minimalist, electronics-influenced pop. She rose to international prominence as a teenager with the single "Royals" and has since been recognized as one of the most influential pop artists of her generation.
Early life
Lorde was born in 1996 in the Auckland area of New Zealand. Her mother, Sonja Yelich, is a published poet, and Lorde has cited the literary atmosphere of her upbringing as an early influence on her writing. She began performing and writing songs in her early teens and was signed to a recording contract while still in school, developing her material over several years before her commercial debut.
Career
Lorde released the EP "The Love Club" in 2012, and its single "Royals" became a worldwide success, topping charts in multiple countries and winning Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Her debut studio album, "Pure Heroine" (2013), was praised for its restrained production and observational lyrics about suburban adolescence and celebrity culture. The record established her as a singular voice in contemporary pop and brought widespread critical acclaim.
With "Royals" she became the first solo female artist in many years to top the U.S. alternative chart, and her success at a young age drew widespread media attention. She worked closely with producer Joel Little on her early material, developing the sparse, beat-driven production that distinguished her records from much contemporary radio pop. Critics frequently highlighted her lyrics, which examined themes of youth, status and authenticity with an observational detachment unusual for a teenage performer.
In 2017 she released her second album, "Melodrama," a concept record structured around the arc of a house party that explored heartbreak, solitude and young adulthood. The album received strong reviews and earned a nomination for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, with the single "Green Light" becoming one of her best-known songs. During this period Lorde also collaborated as a songwriter and curated the soundtrack for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," contributing original songs and selecting artists for the compilation.
Recent work
Lorde returned in 2021 with "Solar Power," a lighter, acoustic-leaning album that drew on themes of nature, well-being and a turn away from digital life. The record marked a stylistic shift from the darker tones of her earlier work and was accompanied by a tour and an alternate-language EP, "Te Ao Mārama," featuring songs reworked in the Māori language as a tribute to her New Zealand heritage. In 2025 she released a further studio album, continuing to explore new directions while maintaining her characteristic focus on songwriting. She has continued to write and record, maintaining a deliberate pace between projects and remaining selective about live appearances. Across her career Lorde has been noted for shaping a wave of moodier, lyric-driven pop and for her influence on younger artists who followed her.
