Kristen Bell is an American actress known for her work across television, film, and animation. She came to prominence as the title character in the teen detective series Veronica Mars and has since built a career that spans comedy, drama, and voice work, most notably as Anna in Disney's Frozen franchise.
Early life
Kristen Anne Bell was born on July 18, 1980, in Huntington Woods, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. She developed an interest in performing as a child, appearing in school and community theater productions. After graduating from Shrine Catholic High School, she enrolled at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied musical theater. She left before completing her degree to pursue acting opportunities, including early work on the New York stage.
Career
Bell appeared in a Broadway revival of The Crucible and the musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer before moving into screen work. Her breakthrough came in 2004 when she was cast as Veronica Mars in the UPN (later The CW) series of the same name, a role that earned her a devoted following and critical praise. During this period she also provided the unseen narrator's voice for the television series Gossip Girl, a role she continued throughout its run.
Her film work includes the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Couples Retreat (2009), and Hit and Run (2012), which she co-starred in alongside her husband Dax Shepard. In 2013 she voiced Princess Anna in Frozen, one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, reprising the role in Frozen II (2019) and related shorts. On television, she starred as Eleanor Shellstrop in the NBC philosophical comedy The Good Place (2016–2020), created by Michael Schur, which earned her wide acclaim and award nominations.
Recent work
Bell has continued to balance live-action and voice projects. She reprised the role of Veronica Mars in a 2014 feature film, funded in part through a high-profile crowdfunding campaign, and again in a 2019 limited revival series for Hulu. In 2023 she starred in the Netflix thriller comedy series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.
