Jose Mourinho
Football manager
José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix is a Portuguese football manager widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential coaches of the modern era. Known for his tactical pragmatism, defensive organisation and combative public persona, he has won domestic league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, and is one of a small number of managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with two different clubs. Early in his career he described himself as "a special one," a phrase that became a lasting part of his public image.
Early life
Mourinho was born on 26 January 1963 in Setúbal, Portugal. His father, Félix Mourinho, was a professional goalkeeper and later a coach, which exposed the young Mourinho to the professional game from an early age. He did not have a notable playing career, instead focusing on coaching education and sports science. His path into elite football came through his work as an interpreter and assistant, most importantly under Bobby Robson at Sporting CP, Porto and Barcelona, and later under Louis van Gaal at Barcelona, where he expanded his coaching responsibilities.
Career
Mourinho's breakthrough came at Porto, where he won the Portuguese league and, in the 2003–04 season, the UEFA Champions League, an achievement that brought him international prominence. He then moved to Chelsea, guiding the club to consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 along with domestic cups. At Inter Milan he completed a historic treble in 2010, winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, his second European title. He subsequently managed Real Madrid, where he won La Liga in 2012, before returning to Chelsea and claiming another Premier League title in 2015.
Mourinho's later club appointments included Manchester United, where he won the EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League in 2017, and Tottenham Hotspur. Across these roles he became known for high-profile rivalries, intense media interactions and a results-driven approach that prioritised winning trophies.
Recent work
Mourinho took charge of AS Roma in 2021 and led the club to victory in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022, adding another European trophy to his record. After his time in Rome he moved to Turkish football to manage Fenerbahçe. Throughout his career he has remained a prominent and frequently debated figure in the sport, valued by supporters for his trophy-winning track record and his ability to build resilient, competitive teams at a series of major European clubs.
