Jon Favreau

Director, actor & producer

Born: October 19, 1966, Queens, New York, United States
Known for: Iron Man, The Mandalorian, Swingers, The Jungle Book

Jon Favreau is an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter whose career bridges independent comedy and large-scale franchise filmmaking. He is known for directing the first films in Marvel's cinematic universe, for creating and producing the Star Wars series The Mandalorian, and for writing and starring in the independent comedy Swingers early in his career.

Early life

Favreau was born on October 19, 1966, in Queens, New York, and grew up in the city. He developed an interest in performing and comedy and spent time in Chicago's improv and theatre scene before moving into film. His early acting work included supporting roles in films and television in the 1990s.

Career

Favreau wrote and starred in Swingers, a low-budget 1996 comedy about aspiring entertainers in Los Angeles that became a cult favorite and helped launch his career, also introducing audiences to his frequent collaborator Vince Vaughn. He continued acting in films and television, including a recurring role on the sitcom Friends, while moving into directing with features such as the science-fiction adventure Zathura and the family comedy Elf, which became a holiday staple.

His profile rose substantially when he directed Iron Man in 2008, the film that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe; he directed its sequel, Iron Man 2, and remained involved with the franchise as a producer and actor, playing the character Happy Hogan across several films. He later directed visually ambitious adaptations of The Jungle Book and The Lion King for Disney, both using extensive digital and virtual-production techniques, and directed and starred in the smaller-scale, well-received comedy Chef, about a chef who starts a food truck.

Recent work

Favreau created The Mandalorian, the live-action Star Wars series that debuted on Disney's streaming service, serving as writer and executive producer and helping pioneer the virtual-production stagecraft, sometimes called the Volume, that was used to film it. The series introduced the popular character widely known as Grogu and was a flagship title for the streaming platform at its launch. He has continued to develop and produce additional Star Wars projects within that universe, including The Book of Boba Fett, and has acted in and lent his voice to several of them. Earlier in his career he also hosted a conversational interview series in which he spoke with directors about their craft. Favreau remains active across directing, producing, and acting, and is recognized for helping shape modern franchise filmmaking while continuing to pursue smaller, more personal projects between large studio productions.
