John Travolta
Actor
John Travolta is an American actor and singer whose career spans several decades, with prominent runs of stardom in the 1970s and a major comeback in the 1990s. He is closely associated with the films Saturday Night Fever and Grease, which made him an icon of that era, and with Pulp Fiction, which revitalized his career and earned him renewed critical attention.
Early life
Travolta was born on February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey, into a large family with ties to performance and the arts. He left school as a teenager to pursue acting, working in regional theatre and television and appearing in stage productions before finding work in Los Angeles. He gained early recognition on the television sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, in which he played one of the high-school students.
Career
Travolta became a major film star in the late 1970s. His lead role as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever, set against the disco era, brought him an Academy Award nomination, and he followed it with the musical Grease, playing Danny Zuko opposite Olivia Newton-John. Both films were enormous commercial successes and made him one of the most recognizable performers of the period. He also released music tied to his screen work.
After a period of less prominent films in the 1980s, including the Look Who's Talking comedies, Travolta experienced a significant career revival in 1994 with his role as the hitman Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, which earned him another Academy Award nomination. The success led to a string of high-profile roles in films such as Get Shorty, the action thriller Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Michael, and the political drama Primary Colors, re-establishing him as a leading actor through the late 1990s.
Recent work
In later years Travolta took on varied roles across drama, action, and comedy, including a performance as Edna Turnblad in the musical film Hairspray and roles in films such as Wild Hogs and the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. He has continued to appear in feature films and independent productions, as well as in a portrayal of attorney Robert Shapiro in the television anthology series The People v. O. J. Simpson. A licensed pilot with a long-standing interest in aviation, he has often spoken about flying and has owned several aircraft, and he remains a widely recognized figure from American cinema whose early films continue to be cultural touchstones.
