Early life
Krasinski was born on October 20, 1979, in Newton, Massachusetts, and grew up in the area. He attended Brown University, where he studied English and developed an interest in playwriting and acting, and he later trained in theatre. Before his breakthrough, he worked in a range of small roles and as a writer, gradually building experience in New York and Los Angeles.
Career
Krasinski's career-defining role came in 2005 when he was cast as Jim Halpert in the American adaptation of The Office, the mockumentary-style sitcom that ran for nine seasons. His portrayal of the affable, prank-loving salesman, and the long-running romance between Jim and Pam, made him one of the show's central figures and brought him broad recognition. During and after the series he took on film roles in comedies and dramas, including appearances in studio features and independent projects.
Among his film credits during this period were romantic comedies and dramas such as Leatherheads, Away We Go, It's Complicated, and Aloha. He co-wrote the drama Promised Land with Matt Damon and starred in it, and he appeared in the action film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. He expanded into directing, helming the adaptation of David Foster Wallace's Brief Interviews with Hideous Men and the family drama The Hollars. His most prominent directorial success arrived in 2018 with A Quiet Place, a horror film in which he also starred opposite Emily Blunt; the film was a major commercial and critical hit and spawned a franchise. He returned to direct and appear in A Quiet Place Part II, which performed strongly at the box office.
Recent work
Krasinski starred as the title character in the action series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, playing the CIA analyst across several seasons. During the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic he created and hosted the web series Some Good News, which gained a large online audience for its focus on uplifting stories. In 2024 he wrote, directed, produced, and appeared in IF, a family fantasy film about imaginary friends featuring a large voice cast. He has continued to take on producing roles and to balance acting with directing, and he remains active in developing projects through his production work.
