Gina Carano
Actress & former MMA fighter
Gina Joy Carano is an American actress and former mixed martial artist. A prominent figure in the early growth of women's mixed martial arts, she later transitioned to acting, appearing in action films and television series before becoming the subject of public controversy over her social-media statements.
Early life
Carano was born on April 16, 1982, in Dallas, Texas. She was raised in Nevada and competed in athletics before taking up Muay Thai, the striking discipline that formed the foundation of her later fighting career. Her background as a striker and her on-camera presence helped make her one of the most recognizable competitors in the sport during its formative years, at a time when women's mixed martial arts had limited mainstream visibility.
Career
Carano began competing in Muay Thai before moving into mixed martial arts in the mid-2000s. She fought in promotions including EliteXC and Strikeforce, where she became one of the most marketable athletes in women's MMA and helped draw mainstream attention to the discipline. Several of her bouts were among the most-watched women's fights of the era, and she was frequently described in the press as one of the sport's first female stars. Her profile rose further through appearances on the rebooted television series American Gladiators, where she competed under the name "Crush." Her competitive MMA career effectively ended after a high-profile title bout against Cris Cyborg, after which she stepped away from active fighting.
Carano subsequently moved into acting, earning a leading role in Steven Soderbergh's action thriller Haywire (2011), which was built around her physical skills and combat training. She appeared in Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and the superhero film Deadpool (2016), among other projects, typically in roles that drew on her athletic background and capacity for choreographed action sequences. Her transition from cage fighting to film made her one of the more prominent athletes to cross over into Hollywood action roles.
Recent work
Carano gained renewed prominence playing the warrior Cara Dune in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, a recurring role across its first two seasons. In 2021 she became the focus of widespread controversy after a series of social-media posts, and Lucasfilm announced she would no longer be part of the series. The episode drew extensive commentary on both sides of the debate over speech and employment in the entertainment industry. Following her departure, Carano continued to take on independent and genre film projects and remained an outspoken public figure on cultural and political issues. A legal dispute related to her dismissal was later reported to have been resolved.
