Casey Neistat is an American filmmaker, YouTube personality and entrepreneur who became one of the most influential figures in online video. He is best known for a fast-paced, cinematic vlogging style that helped shape the daily-vlog format and inspired a generation of digital creators.

Early life

Casey Owen Neistat was born on March 25, 1981, in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. He left high school and home as a teenager, and for a period lived in difficult circumstances while raising a young son. He eventually moved to New York City, where he began making short films alongside his brother Van Neistat, developing the resourceful, do-it-yourself filmmaking approach that would define his work.

Career

The Neistat brothers first attracted attention in the mid-2000s with self-produced short films distributed online, including a widely circulated video about the limited lifespan of iPod batteries. Their work led to an HBO series, "The Neistat Brothers", which aired in 2010 and showcased their personal, observational style of filmmaking.

Casey Neistat's profile grew enormously with the rise of YouTube. Beginning a daily vlog in 2015, he combined energetic editing, drone and action-camera footage, and a personal narrative voice to build a large and devoted audience. His videos, often centered on his life in New York City, his creative process and his travels, became highly influential and were widely imitated by other creators. During this period he also collaborated with major brands and produced advertising work noted for its storytelling.

In 2015 Neistat co-founded Beme, a social media and video-sharing application. The company was acquired by CNN in 2016, and Neistat worked within the media organisation for a time before the venture was wound down. He has frequently spoken about entrepreneurship and the business side of online media.

Recent work

Neistat later founded 368, a creative space and community in New York intended to support other creators, reflecting his interest in fostering the next generation of online filmmakers. He has continued to publish videos and to take on commercial and creative projects, while remaining a recognizable commentator on the culture and economics of digital content.

Widely credited with popularizing the modern vlog and with demonstrating the creative and commercial potential of online video, Neistat is regarded as a pioneering internet creator. He has also been an early adopter of new tools and platforms, experimenting with emerging technology in his films and frequently sharing his views on the evolving economics of the creator industry.

His combination of storytelling, technical experimentation and entrepreneurial activity has made him an enduring and frequently cited influence within the digital media landscape. Through his videos, his ventures and his support for other filmmakers, he has remained a recognizable voice in online media for nearly two decades, helping to define how a generation of independent creators approaches the craft and business of making video for the internet.
