Ashley Graham
Model & body-positivity advocate
Ashley Graham is an American model, television presenter and advocate who became one of the most recognizable figures associated with the body-positivity movement. After more than a decade working steadily in the fashion industry, she gained wider attention in the mid-2010s for high-profile magazine appearances and for campaigning to broaden the range of body types represented in mainstream fashion.
Early life
Graham was born on October 30, 1987, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was scouted at a shopping mall as a young teenager and began modeling locally before signing with agencies and moving into commercial and catalog work. In interviews she has spoken about being diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD during childhood, and about the challenges of entering an industry that, at the time, offered limited opportunities for models outside a narrow set of measurements.
Career
Graham built her early career through catalog and lingerie work, modeling for a range of retailers and brands. Her visibility increased substantially in 2015 and 2016 through a series of widely discussed campaigns and editorial appearances. In 2016 she appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, a moment that received extensive media coverage as part of a broader conversation about size inclusivity in fashion. She subsequently appeared on the cover of Vogue and other major titles, and worked with numerous fashion and beauty brands.
Alongside modeling, Graham expanded into television and hosting. She has served as a host and judge on fashion-oriented competition programs and has presented at award shows and red-carpet events. She also launched a podcast, through which she has conducted long-form interviews on topics including career, motherhood and self-image. Graham has additionally worked as a designer and collaborator on clothing and lingerie lines aimed at offering a wider range of sizes.
A consistent theme of her public work has been advocacy around body image and representation. She has delivered talks, written about her experiences, and used her platform to argue for more inclusive standards in advertising and on the runway. Her 2017 memoir addressed her career and her perspective on confidence and self-acceptance.
Recent work
In recent years Graham has continued to combine modeling with media projects, hosting duties and entrepreneurial ventures. She has remained a frequent presence in fashion campaigns and on magazine covers, and has spoken publicly about pregnancy, motherhood and postpartum body image after having children. She has also been involved with organizations and initiatives that promote movement and inclusivity in fitness and dance.
Graham is widely cited as a figure who helped move discussions about size diversity from the margins toward the center of mainstream fashion. While she has acknowledged the limits of any single career in reshaping an entire industry, her sustained visibility across modeling, television and digital media has made her a durable voice in conversations about representation, and she continues to work across fashion, broadcasting and advocacy.
