Arijit Singh is an Indian playback singer and music composer who is among the most popular and prolific vocalists in Hindi cinema. Known for his emotive, versatile voice, he has recorded a vast catalogue of songs for Indian films and has become one of the most streamed artists in the world.

Early life

Arijit Singh was born on April 25, 1987, in Jiaganj, a town in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India. He was exposed to music early in life through family members who were involved in classical and devotional traditions, and he received training in Indian classical music as a child. He pursued music seriously from a young age, developing a foundation in classical technique that would later inform his film work.

Career

Singh first came to national attention through a televised music talent competition in the mid-2000s. Although early opportunities were limited, he persisted in the music industry, working behind the scenes as an arranger, programmer and assistant to composers, which gave him an understanding of music production beyond singing.

His major breakthrough came with the song Tum Hi Ho from the film Aashiqui 2, which became an enormous hit and established him as a leading playback singer in Bollywood. The success transformed his career, and he soon became one of the most in-demand voices in Hindi cinema, recording songs across a wide range of films and music directors. He went on to deliver numerous popular tracks, including Channa Mereya, and later the widely streamed Kesariya, among many others, and his songs have featured prominently on Indian and global streaming charts.

Recent work

Singh has continued to record extensively for films while also expanding into live performance, touring both within India and internationally to large audiences. He has experimented with composing and producing, and he established his own recording studio and music initiatives in his home state of West Bengal, reflecting a commitment to nurturing musical talent there.

He is consistently ranked among the most listened-to artists globally on streaming platforms, a testament to the enormous reach of Hindi film music. Known for a relatively private and understated public persona compared with many entertainment figures, Singh has earned numerous Indian film-music awards over his career, including multiple honours at major Indian cinema award ceremonies. He has lent his voice to films across several Indian languages in addition to Hindi, broadening his reach across the country's diverse film industries. His concerts, often staged in large stadiums and arenas, regularly sell out, and his recordings continue to dominate playlists of Indian film music both domestically and among the global Indian diaspora. He remains a defining voice of contemporary Bollywood and a central figure in modern Indian popular music.
