Whoopi Goldberg Stranded in Italy Due to Volcanic Eruption

Whoopi Goldberg missed 'The View' after being stranded in Italy by an erupting volcano. Fellow co-hosts faced their own issues, too.

Whoopi Goldberg found herself in quite a spectacular predicament, missing an episode of The View due to an unexpected volcanic eruption in Italy. The beloved television host, currently vacationing in Sicily, shared her not-so-typical travel tale that even she described as taking the cake.
A Volcanic Interruption
In a pre-recorded message aired during the July 6 episode of The View, Whoopi explained her absence, detailing the chaotic situation caused by the eruption of Mount Etna, the Europe’s largest volcano. She revealed, "I am in Sicily right now, and Mount Etna, who is one of our active volcanoes here in Italy, decided to go off today."
Goldberg elaborated on the challenges she faced trying to return to the United States. With all nearby airports closed due to safety precautions following Mount Etna's explosive activity, Whoopi humorously remarked that her travel tale was one for the books. "Everybody has all kinds of stories about their vacations, but mine just takes the cake!"
According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the volcano had commenced an eruptive cycle on June 26, with significant lava flow observed just days later, leading to flight cancellations and stranded travelers.
The Show Must Go On
Certainly, Whoopi wasn't the only co-host grappling with unexpected circumstances. Fellow View co-host Ana Navarro was stuck in Florida, unable to reach the studio due to severe weather conditions. Meanwhile, Sara Haines was managing her own challenges with unspecified storm damage.
Navarro took to Instagram over the weekend to inform fans of her absence, saying, "I’m sorry I won’t be there tomorrow. I’m sure the other ladies will have great, insightful things to say. Take a little time to enjoy ‘The View’ without me." Her humorous and gracious note was met with support from fans.
With three co-hosts missing, producers called upon Joy Behar—who usually takes Mondays off—to step in. Behar greeted viewers with a chuckle, saying, “So you may be asking, ‘Why am I here on a Monday?’ I asked myself the same question!” She also joked about who had begged her to appear on the show, playfully noting, “Because we are down three co-hosts today.”
More Than Just Volcanoes
Behar's lighthearted banter included a jab at Whoopi's unprecedented excuse. Jokingly, she added that it was an amusing use of the "old volcano excuse.” She didn’t stop there, also poking fun at Navarro’s predicament by commenting on the constant heat in Miami, quizzing viewers, “What’s the problem?” Adding to the joviality, when addressing Sara’s situation, she playfully noted the virtually empty audience response to her inquiry about storm damage, quipping, “No, just Sara.”
While Joy Behar effortlessly filled in this time, viewers found themselves keenly awaiting the return of Whoopi and her co-stars. With their unpredictable schedules due to weather issues and volcanic eruptions, it appears the ladies of The View have quite the collection of adventure stories to share!
