Jesse Eisenberg Says He No Longer Wants to Be Linked to Zuckerberg

The Social Network actor told a film festival audience he's done with the Zuckerberg comparison and thinks the Meta CEO doesn't care about people.

Jesse Eisenberg Says He No Longer Wants to Be Linked to Zuckerberg

Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network back when most people had no idea who the Facebook founder was. Fourteen years later, the actor is making clear he'd rather leave that association behind — and his reasons are pretty direct.

What Eisenberg Actually Said

Speaking at a KVIFF Talk during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, Eisenberg explained that when he took the role, Zuckerberg was barely a public figure. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eisenberg recalled that the project felt odd at the time simply because "no one really knew who he was." That made the character interesting to explore as a piece of fiction.

The calculus has shifted. Eisenberg was blunt about why he now wants distance from the role: "I see that the person who created this website is not a person who cares about people. If this guy is the creator of this world, I don't want to live in that world." He also mentioned that a new film about Zuckerberg is apparently in development, and that's another reason he'd prefer not to stay associated with the part.

It's worth noting the context here. Zuckerberg has been in the news consistently as Meta pushes into new product areas, and the company's internal AI ambitions have faced scrutiny. Whether you agree with Eisenberg's read on Zuckerberg's character or not, the tech CEO is now one of the most recognizable figures in the world — a very different situation from 2010.

Why He Avoids Social Media Entirely

Eisenberg's comments about Zuckerberg connect to a broader stance he holds: he doesn't use social media at all. He described the whole ecosystem — Facebook, Twitter, and the rest — as something that genuinely frightens him. His reasoning wasn't particularly ideological; it was more personal. He said he already feels uncomfortable talking about himself in public, and broadcasting mundane details of his life online would make that worse. "All that stuff scares me so much," he said.

For a working actor who depends on public visibility, opting out of social platforms entirely is an unusual choice. It also makes his criticism of Zuckerberg feel a bit more consistent — this isn't someone who dislikes Meta while quietly scrolling Instagram.

The Festival Setting

The comments came during what was a full day for Eisenberg at KVIFF's 60th edition, running July 3–11. Earlier in the day, he received the festival's President's Award ahead of a screening of The Double, directed by Richard Ayoade, in which he plays the lead. The KVIFF Talks format gives attendees a more conversational look at filmmakers and actors, which is likely why Eisenberg's remarks were as candid as they were.

Other notable names at the festival included Dustin Hoffman, who received the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contributions to World Cinema, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also received a President's Award on opening night.

What He's Working on Next

Eisenberg isn't slowing down as a creative. He wrote, directed, and co-stars in an upcoming film called The Debut, which features Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. He also wrote the music and lyrics for a musical sequence within the film. A24 is releasing it in the fall.

His criticism of Zuckerberg is one actor's opinion, not a policy argument. But in an environment where tech leaders are drawing more scrutiny — not just in entertainment but across industries — it's a sentiment that a lot of people probably share, whether or not they've ever played the man on screen.
