Sources say Jason Sudeikis was caught off guard after Olivia Wilde revisited their split on 'Call Her Daddy,' with friends pushing back on her account.

Jason Sudeikis 'Blindsided' by Olivia Wilde's Breakup Comments

A private split dragged back into the headlines

Years after they quietly went their separate ways, Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde are back in the conversation, and by all accounts the actor is not happy about it. Sudeikis was reportedly "blindsided" after Wilde reopened the story of their breakup during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, according to Reality Tea. The outlet reports that Wilde used the platform to revisit a painful chapter, recounting a moment from around her birthday that, in her telling, crystallized just how far apart the couple had drifted before they separated shortly before the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Reflecting on that period, Wilde said the distance between them had become impossible to ignore. "And he wasn't wrong. We didn't know each other anymore," she said, per Reality Tea, framing the end of the relationship as a mutual recognition that the connection they once had was gone.

Sudeikis' camp pushes back

The response from Sudeikis' side has been swift, even if it has come entirely through intermediaries rather than the actor himself. People close to him told Reality Tea that he was caught off guard by Wilde's decision to air such intimate details in public, especially so long after the fact. According to those sources, the frustration centers less on the breakup itself than on how it is being characterized now.

Among the reactions attributed to his circle, per the outlet:

  • "Jason is incredibly private and was shocked to see this story resurface years later."
  • "The narrative makes it sound like Jason simply checked out of the relationship."
  • "Jason has spent years rebuilding his life. He doesn't understand why old wounds need to be reopened."

The throughline of those comments is a belief that Wilde's account, while presented as her honest perspective, leaves out important context about what actually led to the split. His associates reportedly view the situation as far more complicated than any single retelling can capture, and they bristle at a framing that, in their reading, casts him as the partner who gave up.

Why this one stings

What makes the renewed attention especially delicate is that this is not just a former couple trading impressions of a past relationship. Reality Tea notes that Sudeikis' chief concern is reportedly the two children he shares with Wilde, who may one day read the coverage of their parents' romance and its unraveling. For a man described by those around him as fiercely protective of his private life, the prospect of his kids encountering a public narrative about the breakup is said to weigh heavily.

Since their separation, the former couple have largely managed to keep their co-parenting arrangement out of the spotlight, a rare feat for two high-profile stars who once shared one of Hollywood)'s most talked-about relationships. That relative quiet is part of why Wilde's candid podcast remarks register as such a notable departure, and why they appear to have struck a nerve.

For now, the public is hearing only one half of the story directly. As of the report, Sudeikis had not addressed Wilde's comments on the record, with everything attributed to his perspective arriving through unnamed sources. Whether he chooses to respond himself, or simply lets the moment pass, will likely shape how long this particular flare-up lingers, but those close to him suggest his preference, as ever, is to keep the details where he believes they belong: out of view.

There are always two sides to these stories, and we only ever hear one.

Airing a private split on a huge podcast and then people being shocked it caused friction, what did anyone expect. I feel for both of them honestly, but co-parents really should keep this stuff off the mic for their kids' sake more than anything.
