Inside Kim Kardashian's Journey with Her Biographer for 'Citizen Kim'

Kim Kardashian's life has always been an open book—literally and figuratively. Yet, when the reality star decided to be the subject of a comprehensive biography titled Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, she was determined to take an active part in the storytelling process, a decision shaped by her close connections in the industry.

Seeking Endorsement from the Elite

Before signing on for this significant project with biographer Jonathan Van Meter, Kardashian consulted none other than Anna Wintour, the iconic Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. Known for her sharp eye in managing public personas, Wintour’s blessing carried weight.

Kardashian's history with Wintour spans many years, with Van Meter contributing multiple high-profile pieces for Vogue, including one on Kardashian herself. This endorsement proved essential for Kardashian as she prepared to open her world to Van Meter.

The Intensive Collaboration Process

Over a five-year period dedicated to the project, Kardashian actively participated in the writing process, providing feedback on drafts and fact-checking every chapter. Van Meter revealed that she returned pages with a multitude of handwritten edits, showcasing her commitment to the authenticity of her narrative.

One memorable moment occurred while Van Meter was drafting a chapter about Kardashian’s teenage romance with her first boyfriend, TJ Jackson. Upon reading it, Kardashian became so emotional that she had to pause her reading for the night, indicating the personal significance of those early experiences in her life.

Family Voices

To enrich the biography, Van Meter not only focused on Kardashian but also conducted interviews with significant figures from her past. This included family members and former classmates, helping create a richly detailed portrait of Kardashian's life. Notable conversations included insights from Caitlyn Jenner, who reflected on her experiences with Kim when they were younger.

However, when Caitlyn shared memories with Van Meter, Kardashian humorously responded, "Let’s see if it’s accurate," demonstrating her investment in ensuring that every detail was spot-on.

The Kanye West Chapter

Originally, Kardashian had planned to include her ex-husband Kanye West in the narrative. Her close friend and publicist Tracy Romulus expressed confidence that West would share his side of the story. However, as West’s behavior became more unpredictable, Van Meter decided to forgo this interview, labeling him as an “unreliable narrator.”

Despite the cuts, Van Meter fondly recalls the moments he spent writing, even expressing disappointment over the pages that didn’t make the final cut, especially because they portrayed a different side of Kardashian’s upbringing — one that she hadn’t fully consented to discuss publicly.

Conclusion

Kim Kardashian’s journey through the creation of Citizen Kim is a testament to her proactive approach to storytelling and self-representation. By taking control of her narrative, she not only shaped how her life story would unfold on the pages but also indicated her desire for accuracy and emotional truth. For fans eager to delve into her life, this biography promises to unveil the layers behind the superstar known for her resilience, business acumen, and authenticity.
